It's Thanksgiving and Jackie's made a couple of pumpkin pies today, and soon we'll be digging into her patented sauce with baseball-sized meatballs, sausage and plenty of pasta. What would you expect from a red-blooded Italian woman and a guy (me) who despises turkey?
Jackie's daughter and family, Jacquie and Matt Campman, and their kids, Mikaela, Karleigh and Braedon, will be here, even after going out for seafood at lunch time.
So no turkey for them either!
It was funny, the other day when Trump pardoned those two turkey, I was thinking that every turkey should be pardoned. That way I'd never have to eat one!
Last night on the local TV news there was a report warning people to be careful when they deep-fry their turkey. They said it's a bad idea to put a frozen turkey in hot grease, for example. "That could turn into a bomb," warned the fireman who they interviewed.
They also said a deep-fried turkey should be deep-fried outside because it could be dangerous. Guess a lot of people deep-fry turkeys here in Myrtle Beach and a few kitchen fires must have resulted, because the fireman told viewers NOT to use water to extinguish a grease fire. Good advice.
Turns out, that's exactly what our neighbor, Paul Hudacko, did with his turkey! Who knew?
I've never had a deep-fried turkey. It's always been baked in the oven and you always get stuck with mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole and such, sometimes even pickled beats, which taste like dirt. I hate all that stuff, especially mashed potatoes with gooey turkey-based gravy.
Of course, traditional pumpkin pie is scrumptious. But I also like apple pie, and since I couldn't get Jackie to bake both today, and since I wasn't about to try, I bought one at Publix just in case. I'm sure it won't be nearly as good as the one Jackie would have made, but wouldn't.
So just what I need. Pasta. Meatballs. Sausage. Italian bread. Pumpkin Pie. Apple Pie. Not exactly the Atkins diet, but oh well, it's only once a year.
