So today President Trump and Congressional Democrats made nice over infrastructure, acting like adults for a change, apparently agreeing on a $2 trillion plan to fix America's highways, bridges, broadband system and more.
It's almost too good to believe. And you know what they say when something seems too good to be true...it probably isn't.
Hard to believe that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Donald Trump are actually able to look past the fact that they are embroiled in a battle that will certainly lead to more nasty Congressional hearings over Trump's Russia connections and the Mueller Report and agree on anything. Hell, it's not inconceivable that Trump won't face impeachment over all that.
So the fact that Democrats left the White House today enthusiastically reporting that a deal had been struck was somewhat surprising. Of course, one little tiny matter was left unsettled. And that's where is the $2 trillion going to come from?
Ah, yes.
Schumer said the package would include funds to repair roads and bridges, along with water projects and "a big emphasis" on broadband and the power grid, so "we can bring clean energy from one end of the country to the other."
Really? Trump is going to spend money on "clean energy?" Do you really believe that?
There were also some notable absences at the meeting today. Ever hear of Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans? They weren't in the meeting, but can you see Congressional Republicans supporting a big fat federal gas tax increase to help pay for the infrastructure plan? Really?
Was Trump laying some kind of a trap for Democrats? Did he play nice at the meeting only to plan a double cross later? I wouldn't think he would ever do such a thing, do you? Trump's supposed to come up with a payment plan over the next three weeks. We'll see what comes of that.
Because what's going to happen in the meantime?
Just a little thing like Democrats hauling Trump's "great attorney general" William P. Barr before a Congressional hearing Wednesday to cross examine him about the Mueller Report, and probably subsequent hearings -- maybe even with Mueller, himself, as a star witness.
Turns out that Mueller sent Barr a letter after he released his four-page synopsis of the 400-plus report saying it wasn't exactly accurate. It didn't quite capture the essence of the report, Mueller complained. That's interesting.
All of there continuing Russia stuff is going to make Trump happy, I'm sure. He can't go 12 hours without tweeting that there was "no collusion, no obstruction" and that he was totally vindicated. What's that old saw about he who protests too much?
But for now, at least until Senate Democrats are finished with Barr Wednesday afternoon, all is happy along the Potomac -- at least when it comes to talking about roads and bridges.
