The projected death toll in the United States from the coronavirus ranges from 100,000 to 2.2 million. Despite this, there have been comments from some Republicans that older Americans should be willing to die.
Unbelievable!! Get out of the way, gramps. Leave those ventilators for younger, healthier people who have something to live for.
Remember when Republicans claimed Obamacare would result in Death Panels, where doctors would decide who would live and who would die? That was so much BS, but now that reality could, indeed, come to pass. Why?
Because during this pandemic, many doctors may be forced to decide who will be allowed to use the precious medical supplies, like ventilators, that are quickly dwindling as the rate of illness rises.
These are the Death Panels once predicted by Republicans, but they will be the perpetrators.
Ironically, one of the measures that could be employed to help the uninsured, and provide essential medical treatment, is to re-open enrollment in Obamacare. However, this is a move Trump has refused to take and instead is considering allowing hospitals to use coronavirus relief funds to cover the cost of treating the uninsured.
However, that could potentially siphon hospital funds away from hotspots like New York (Democratic control) toward states that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act like Florida and Texas (Republican control).
The Blame Game
On top of that, Trump and his administration are busy playing the Blame Game.
Trump sidekick Mike Pence is blaming the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and China for allowing the coronavirus to grow unabated. Trump, predictably, blames President Obama for failing to act and the states for having inadequate supplies.
Meanwhile, the captain of the Theodore Roosevelt , who raised the alarm and asked for the evacuation of his ship to limit the spread of coronavirus has been relieved of duty, while two cruise ships with coronavirus victims have been allowed to dock in Miami despite Coast Guard warnings.
And, of course, it was the Trump administration that closed the White House's National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense, established by President Obama after the Ebola epidemic of 2014. Its mission, according to Beth Cameron, who was in charge of that office, was to prepare for the next disease outbreak and prevent it from becoming an epidemic or pandemic.
Indeed, these are trying times.
Many will die, and we appear to have leadership focused on painting a rosy picture, spreading lies and misinformation, shifting blame for its own failures, and worrying about re-election rather than tackling this deadly pandemic head-on.
This is evidenced by Trump's daily briefings, which have replaced campaign rallies as a means to stroke his massive ego. Indeed, his campaign's strategy is to cast blame on former Vice President, and likely Democratic challenger, Joe Biden for the current outbreak.
Real leaders accept responsibility. They admit their faults and seek to correct them. Remember when President Obama made the infamous, “If you like your doctor..” claim. He was roasted for it! Yet, the constant lies, distortions and misinformation are being completely ignored by those very same “leaders” who criticized President Obama.
We need to come together as a country. We need to demand the Death Panels be replaced by necessary medical supplies. And while we're at it, we need to demand that the media stop covering Trump's daily reality-TV briefings.
In short, we need a leader, one with foresight, courage, wisdom and honesty. One who we can all trust in this most difficult of times.
