In 1992, Dan Quayle was roasted for misspelling ‘potato’. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was slammed for admitting he may have lusted in his heart. Bill Clinton faced multiple sex abuse allegations. Other than Clinton, these incidents were cited by many as reasons for disqualifying a candidate.
The Clinton allegations were even used against his wife, Hillary, when the accusers were invited to attend a Presidential debate.
Now, we have a Commander-in-Chief who has committed, or been accused of, each of these offenses, yet his supporters refuse to hold him accountable.
How far has the bar been lowered?
Trump cannot speak in complete sentences, but calls himself “like really, really smart” and a “very stable genius”.
His Twitter account is littered with misspellings, false accusations and confusing comments like “covfefe” and “hamberders”. It gets a mere shrug from his base.
In a 2006 interview, he stated that, “if she wasn’t my daughter, I’d probably date her”, when commenting about his daughter, Ivanka. Hints of incest would doom any other candidate, yet Trump gets a pass.
Only this week another accuser arose to accuse Trump of rape. Despite sounding eerily like his infamous Access Hollywood comments , he still faces almost zero backlash. Couldn’t have done it, he said. “Not my type.”
Where is the accountability? Where is the moral outrage? Why has the bar been set so low for this administration?
It used to be the excuse that he “isn’t a politician”, so he should get some slack over not adhering to protocol. In fact, his base embraced his approach as living up to his promise to Drain the Swamp of Washington insiders. Instead, he filled his cabinet with pro-business political neophytes who used their brief stints in the administration to enhance their personal agendas.
Still, no outcry over two years later.
Now he is ‘joking’ about extending his time in office. If anyone else made such a claim, they would be vilified and laughed out of town.
How low is too low? When will there be accountability? When will we finally Take a Stand?
