Quoting from the book's Epilogue:
Former Vice President Joe Biden says "we can, and we must, restore the soul of our nation."
He is right. Under the presidency of Donald John Trump, America's "soul" has become darkened as he has systematically and deliberately sought to divide us as a people, encouraging racism, hate, and suspicion one against another.
It has been a mean presidency prosecuted by an insecure, vicious, vindictive man who has little regard for the people he has sworn to protect and defend.
The preceding pages have chronicled many of those acts, but there will be many more to come. Just this morning as I write this, I see the headline "Trump administration asks Supreme Court to invalidate Obamacare." The filing came the same day the government reported that nearly 500,000 peoplle who lost their health insurance durinfg the pandemic gained Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the administration's late night request was "an act of unfathomable cruelty" during the pandemic.
Of course, she is correct. But it was an act that typified the mentality of this president, his hatred for his predicessor, Barack Obama, the father of the ACA, a hatred that has guided many of Trump's most harmful actions throughout his presidency.
Don Kohn, the chairman of the Horry County, SC, Democratic Party is fond of saying that the November 3 election will be "the most consequential election of our lifetime."
Indeed, that is true. Never, it seems, have the stakes been so high. Yes, we must "restore the soul of our nation."
